As a child and young adult, I often wondered if there was a purpose to the bright colored leaves other than simply being a brilliant phenomenon of chlorophyll breaking down exposing the leaves' true radiance. I always felt that there had to be a greater purpose. I only knew that I felt happier with the sun’s rays setting fire to the colors; the cool, crisp air wafting the smell of dead leaves is intoxicating to the senses. It’s practically impossible to remain inside and it clearly affects us all in the same way judging from the crowds at annual rituals of apple-picking, pumpkin-choosing and fall hikes.
Nothing in nature is an accident. Every event that takes place whether we are witness to it or not, has been thought out, and has a purpose, including exquisite and bold fall hues. What I have since learned is this burst of color is nature’s way of charging our bodies. It is not an accident that our lower physical chakras are red, orange and yellow, reflected in fall foliage. Fall colors exist to boost our energy levels by charging up these chakras to help us get through the long, colorless days of winter, nature’s version of color therapy or chromotherapy.
Red leaves assist with stability and good health of our root chakra, just in time for what we term flu season. The orange leaves support sexuality and our emotions, bright colorful days are optimistic and male testosterone and female estrogen levels are at their highest, making October a rather sexy month. Last but not least are the golden leaves, boosting balance, playfulness and spontaneity, calling us out to take the scenic route and gathering with others for cozy brunches and outdoor adventure. Go on, get moving, make the most of these glorious days, for too quickly the world will be once again blanketed in white.
