Heart Chakra 101 – Deficiency, Excess and Balance

Updated: Nov 28, 2021

As we continue to move up the spine to the forth chakra in review, the Heart Chakra, let us review quickly the location and orientation of the first three chakras covered in the previous three blogs.

The Root Chakra is situated at the base of the spine, and is associated with survival and self-preservation whereas the Sacral Chakra is located in the abdomen and is associated with self-gratification and the Solar Plexus Chakra is in the upper abdomen, and is associated with self-definition.

The heart chakra in the centre of the seven chakras and is the bridge between the previous physical chakras, and the higher three mental chakras. The heart chakra is to unite the mind and body, our physical selves with our spiritual selves.

The following excerpts of information on deficiency, excess and balance within this chakra are taken from an extraordinary work of art by Anodea Judith—in her book Eastern Body, Western Mind.

Heart Chakra—Chakra #4:

  • Associated with self-acceptance and acceptance of others

  • Located in the chest, level with the heart

When this chakra is deficient, the following issues may arise:

  • Antisocial, withdrawn, cold

  • Critical, judgmental, intolerant of self or others

  • Loneliness, isolation

  • Depression

  • Fear of intimacy, fear of relationships

  • Lack of empathy

  • Narcissism

When this chakra has excess energy, the effects can entail

  • Codependency

  • Poor boundaries

  • Demanding

  • Clinging

  • Jealousy

  • Overly sacrificing

When this chakra is balanced;

  • Compassionate

  • Loving

  • Empathetic

  • Self-loving

  • Altruistic

  • Peaceful, balanced

  • Good immune system

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” – Oscar Wilde

Indeed, this is where all healthy love begins. For only one who has a healthy life balance within themselves can hope to experience healthy, fulfilling relationships with others. Two halves do not, in the world of love, make a whole.
