Crown Chakra 101 – Deficiency, Excess and Balance

Updated: Nov 28, 2021

Seventh, Crown or Sahasrara Chakra
Seventh, Crown or Sahasrara Chakra

Having progressively scaled our chakras one by one, we now find ourselves at the summit, the seventh chakra in review, the Crown chakra. One final time let’s pause to review quickly the location and orientation of the first six chakras covered in the previous blogs.

The Root Chakra is situated at the base of the spine, and is associated with survival and self-preservation whereas the Sacral Chakra is located in the abdomen and is associated with self-gratification. The Solar Plexus chakra is found in the upper abdomen, and is associated with self-definition, followed by the Heart Chakra located in the chest, level with the heart and is associated with self-acceptance and acceptance of others. The Throat Chakra sits at the pharyngeal plexus of the throat and is associated with self-expression and the Third-Eye Chakra is poised between the eyebrows and is associated with self-reflection.

Not unlike flowers our human bodies begin with the need to be rooted, grounded to the earth in order to absorb its energy through smaller chakras in our feet. This energy in a healthy chakra system will systematically continue to move up, charging each chakra along our stem, arriving at our flower, the Crown Chakra, which blooms, opening itself up to the divine. We are all souls living out a physical incarnation and it is deeply important to not lose ourselves in the material world, our jobs, homes, cars and children. It is important for us to have soul time, to stay in touch with the larger picture and not to forget that we too are divine and that there is a deeper meaning to life than running around doing errands.

The following excerpts of information on deficiency, excess and balance within this chakra are taken from an extraordinary work of art by Anodea Judith—in her book Eastern Body, Western Mind.

Crown Chakra—Chakra #7:

  • Associated with self-knowledge

  • Located in the Cerebral cortex

When this chakra is deficient, the following issues may arise:

  • Spiritual cynicism

  • Learning difficulties

  • Rigid belief systems

  • Apathy

  • Combined with excess energy in lower chakras – materialism, greed, and domination of others

When this chakra has excess energy, the effects can entail

  • Over intellectualization

  • Spiritual addiction

  • Confusion

  • Dissociation from the body

When this chakra is balanced;

  • Ability to perceive, analyze and assimilate information

  • Intelligent, thoughtful, and aware

  • Open-minded, able to question

  • Spiritually connected

  • Wisdom and mastery, broad understanding

The Role of Reiki in Chakra Health:

Truly, one of the easiest and most effective methods to rehabilitate our damaged or blocked chakras is through Reiki. This restorative treatment is incredibly potent and yet non-invasive, mending damage accumulated throughout our lives, and speedily leading towards self-transformation and overall improvement. Reiki energy is channelled through a healer’s hand chakras by way of various hand placements above each of the recipient’s body chakras, charging them and in turn the aura, the body’s protective energy field. Charging helps to open, heal and affect the rate and direction of spin of the chakra, which in turn assists in overall healing.
