Childhood Games and Playing Pretend – clues to your life purpose

Playing Healer on a Foal

I once read somewhere, many years ago, that a wonderful place to begin to clarify what it is you really want to do in life, is to return to a time when you lived constantly in the moment, dreamed big, because you knew no different, and played pretend, wholeheartedly. Yes, that’s right, regress back to your childhood and pre-teen years, I highly recommend this exercise. In these moments of play, we were honoring who we truly were, we knew then, and unbeknownst to our conscious mind, just what it was, we came into the world to accomplish.

I can tell you that this exercise hit me so hard I actually cried. I cried tears of sadness for I missed that beautiful innocent Michelle, she had no cares in the world other than to play. She was so pure, joyful and innocent. In her pre-teen years, she was so sure of who she was and where she was going. She was fearless then, she never entertained the thought that she couldn’t do this or that and she had lofty dreams. Tears of joy were spilled as well, in remembering all my favorite games, real & pretend. I was one with nature, forever outside, exploring the fields, the forest and the ponds, all the while pretending to be a healer of all animals, wild and domestic with whom I would speak telepathically. I had a connection with animals and I was consistently imagining various ways to serve and heal them. I spent many hours wallpapering my room with portraits of animals (and Michael Jackson), that I sketched. At times I would imagine healing people as well, however I found it less enjoyable, dialoguing for them as well. You see, I was very practical in my dream-world, I was all about maximizing the fun and eliminating the work.

Fast forward forty years, I am finally heading home. Just this morning on this warm winter day, I spent an hour with two beautiful, gracious horses that I have been gifted and blessed to have as two of my animal reiki case studies. From a very young age, horses have had an extra-special place in my heart and my fantasies. It pleases me to no end that I will integrate animal energy healing into my mix. I look forward to the addition of clients of the four-legged variety to compliment clients of the two-legged variety, who’s dialogue I have come to appreciate most fully now.

Playing pretend has finally blossomed into “being” for real, and I couldn’t be happier. There is really nothing more wonderful that accepting and being who you truly are. Reconnect with your inner child and play again, it’s wonderful medicine.

Love & Light,

Michelle Rose
